Holistic Relaxation and Calmness: Meditation

Meditation was first associated with religious practices, like in Buddhism and Hinduism. However, as time goes by, this is not done only for religious purposes, but people tend to practice it as it is calming and relaxing to the people who do meditation.

According to studies, it is a good workout for your brain to focus on one thing or happening for few moments, as it will help in releasing the stress from the body and the mind is relaxed. Also, the proven effect of meditation is improved blood circulation and reduced production of stress hormones.

There are different types of meditation. Some are very popular as people tend to do bandwagon. Here are the types that are a simple type of meditation:

  • Mantra meditation – This is done with the use of a sound, word or phrase that you will utter out loud or silently that can relax you. The sound should be relaxing. You can usually hear this type of meditation that is associated with religious practices.
  • Breath awareness – Almost all types of meditation can be correlated to this type. You focus then on breathing with a pattern or rhythm, with counting on the inhale and exhale and doing the inhale through the nose and exhaling through the mouth.
  • Item meditation – You picture out a particular object and you will focus on its appearance, color, shape, texture, and other physical attributes.
  • Active meditation – You concentrate on your thoughts while doing physical activities like walking, yoga or swimming.

There are other types of meditation but those mentioned above are the most common that are practiced. There are some meditation practices that even combine a few types of meditation, as they correlate or effective when combined. For example, breathing awareness can be done with active meditation, which can be observed when you do yoga.
